The useful Michael Dirda at the Washington Post did <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/entertainment/books/the-copyright-has-expired-on-thousands-of-books-here-are-the-best-ones-to-read/2019/02/05/732b4a00-289f-11e9-8eef-0d74f4bf0295_story.html?utm_term=.6b690e1e0b15">an article about some of the titles</a> he thought were interesting from that year. (In case the link stops working search for his name and "1923 and me".)<br />

One problem - not a single link actually went to a public domain source for the books. So this piece corrects that. Below is a list of his choices and where you can find the books, completely and legally free.<br />

I expected that these books would appear in downloadable versions on the usual places early in the year but as of this writing many still haven't. I don't really know how these things work and had thought that the sites would just change a parameter or maybe run a sub-routine but clearly it's not that simple. Despite its title <i>Le Petit Journal des Refusées</i> is both American and in English. Appearing in San Francisco in 1896 it announced the launch of a new artistic journal that would accept only work rejected elsewhere. This was the only issue. Did it just fail to take off? Was it a one-off joke? A prank? Almost certainly the latter two considering the advertisement in the image below (from January 1902 issue of <i>The Literary Collector</i>).<br />

The contents aren't exactly what you might expect ("I'd love to hunt for angels / And shoot them on the wing") while physically the journal has an odd trapezoidal shape and most surviving copies are slightly different. (The link above has three versions.) There are hand-applied images to a few pages, changes in paper stock (wallpaper according to some sources), and even some with differing content. Despite all the names attached to the various pieces it was actually done by one person.<br />
<br />
There's very little background information (though why would there be?). The most substantial appears to be a piece by Johanna Drucker but I can't find an accessible version and have only read the first couple of pages. <br />

Though the credited name is James Marrion that's actually a pseudonym for Gelett Burgess, a San Fransisco artist and poet with a decidely comic sensibililty. It's probably no surprise that miniature paintings are small paintings, largely portraits and according to these books most common from the late Renaissance through the Victorian era. (There's another type of "miniature painting" which is still in existence and involves minature figures used for table-top games.) Some of the work here goes into more detail about the artists than I would have expected was known but then they're focusing on court or society works.<br />
<br />
The book by John Lumsden Propert (1834-1902) seems to be the standard work on the subject. A quick search didn't find anything substantial that's more recent. Propert was a London physician who collected art and appears to have created the interest in miniatures. He claims to have written <i>A History</i> on slips of paper while making his medical visits. The first bookplate Aubrey Beardsley designed was for Propert (and is included below).<br />

Dudley Heath (1867-1945) was the son of a miniatures painter who later added photography to his business. He followed in that career, also becoming an art historian and lecturer. A<a href="http://www.jjhc.info/heathernestdudley1945.htm"> more full biography</a> is online.<br />

Charles William Day (dates not found) was best known for a popular 1836 etiquette manual that went through many editions and was published in the US. His book on miniatures is a how-to guide but seemed worth including.<br />
<br />
George Charles Williamson (1858-1942) was a prolific author, usually on art history. He studied at the University of London and later became the art editor at the publisher George Bell. He contributed several entries to the 11th edition of the <i>Britannica </i>and to the <i>Catholic Encyclopedia</i>. Some of his paperes are held at Boston College. <br />

In one of art's more curious developments there was a trend in the 18th century for miniature portraits of single eyes. (Of course there's a <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eye_miniature">Wikipedia page</a>.) According to Hanneke Grootenboer's 2012 <i>Treasuring the Gaze: Intimate Vision in Late Eighteenth-Century Eye Miniatures</i>, Williamson organized the first exhibition of these works in 1905. (n53 on p188)<br />
<br />
Joshua James Foster (1847-1923) was born in Dorchester and trained in art publishing. He seems to have run the London Art Business, possibly a studio since a photo Foster made of Henry Irving is in the National Portrait Gallery. Foster published several works on art topics.<br />

Some anthropologists and enthusiastic travellers in the late 19th and early 20th centuries were fascinated by the sheer variety of religious practices, devoting a lot of time to collecting information and hypothesizing links. The big idea, at least in my superficial understanding, was roughly that it's all of one big piece, not exactly that all religions are the same but that they're at least similar and it's worthwhile mapping a lot of links between them. <i>The Golden Bough</i> is the best known result of this but there are plenty of others, if not quite so massive (or so entertaining). <br />
<br />
This week's post is a collection of books from this period about serpent worship. Some are fairly straight forward accounts while others wade right into the comparative religion aspects that I suspect don't hold up today.<br />
<br />
The first link is to the article from the famous 1911 edition of the Britannica because it gives a good overview and is mostly contemporary with the books.<br />
<br />
<i>Ophiolatreia</i> was anonymously published but is considered to be the work of Hargrave Jennings (1817-1890), an esotericist and Rosicrucian who was obsessed with the idea that religion is basically phallic worship. Or maybe sun worship too - I'll admit to not being able to get very far into his stuff.<br />
<br />
By contrast, John Bathurst Deane (1797-1887) was a schoolmaster and Anglican clergyman. He also married the daughter of John Lemprière (of the dictionary fame). Deane ties serpent worship into Christian belief, probably not much more plausibly than Jennings.<br />
<br />
Didn't find much about Charles Frederick Oldham except that he was a British naval surgeon serving in India during the 1870s. The book is based on some of his experiences there and due to the date I'd guess was written during retirement.<br />
<br />
Wilfrid Dyson Hambly (1886-1962) worked at the Field Museum and published several similar works, probably the most recognizable is <i>The History of Tattooing</i> which has been reprinted by Dover.<br />
<br />
E.G. Squier (1821-1888) was a New York archaeologist and journalist who worked in the Mississippi Valley and Central America. There's a 2005 biography of him by Terry A. Barnhart.<br />
<br />
John Samuel Phené (1822-1912) was a British architect and antiquarian who published several pamphlets - this appears to be his most substantial work. The way I heard the story is that late in the 15th century Vasco de Gama made his first major voyage, intending to open new trade routes to India. In 1498 he landed on the southwestern tip of India (modern Kerala) and was surprised to discover that there was already a thriving community of Christians there, moreover ones practicing older beliefs. In my mind I somewhat imagined this like the scene in <i>Monty Python and the Holy Grail</i> where the knights reach a castle, ask if the inhabitants want to join the quest for the Grail, and are dumbfounded to receive the answer that the inhabitants already have one.<br />
<br />
This group is called St Thomas Christians after the story that the apostle Thomas visited in 52 CE and established their church. (They're also called Syrian Christians after early Syriac speakers who immigrated and settled there.) Though the story about Thomas seems likely to not be true there's just enough plausible evidence that it can't be dismissed out of hand. There are even claims that his tomb is nearby - you can visit it (or at least one possibility). Vasco's landing prompted the arrival of priests a couple of years later which threw the St Thomas Christians, who were fully organized and well functioning, into turmoil that seems to have never entirely settled. In any case, the story I heard was only part of it. The St Thomas Christians weren't completely unknown in Europe since there had been European visitors in late antiquity and the middle ages. Marco Polo even made a short report about them and there were Church travellers in the 14th century. In fact I have a suspicion that the Vasco story may not be completely accurate because I've only seen it repeated in second-hand sources but don't have time to check biographies or the voyage journals. One main book and then a few supplemental ones.<br />

The Yates book is both an explanation and a guide. Her point was to help the British both understand French cooking and to adopt more economical practices. As an example, she describes the French demand for soup (compared to what she says is a British reluctance) as giving a warm start to the meal but also reducing the need for liquids (specifically mentioning wine and the money that saves) and in some cases adjusting for the possible lower quality of following dishes. These soups are also light with meat and therefore more economical.<br />
<br />
Things like that can still be adopted to some degree today though very few of us will install brick ovens into our kitchens. (Though Yates is only explaining, not recommending.) She discusses how the French serve vegetables, the butchering of pigs, the use of sauces, how to construct soups, differences in frying techniques, and so on.<br />
<br />
She then ends each chapter with some actual recipes, most still quite useful and often familiar. (Though a Briton would find her pickle-less "cheese sandwich" not quite the thing.) I'm half-tempted to make the mushroom ketchup ("there is no more useful ketchup for kitchen use").<br />
<br />
Lucy H. Yates (1863-c1935) was a British journalist who wrote about cooking and housekeeping, producing many books on that subject (<i>Handbook of Fish Cookery</i>, <i>The Model Kitchen</i>, <i>Marriage on Small Means</i>). The De Rivaz book has thirty menus, generally on the pattern of a soup, fish course, meat, vegetable and a dessert. The receipes are valid but it's interesting to see how the meal is constructed.<br />

Mario's book is divided into categories (eggs, sauces, roasts) with a short suggestion of menus at the end. The recipes are a bit more simple.<br />

<i>French Cookery for American Homes</i> is very similar to the Mario book.<br />

The Iliad closes with Hector's funeral - this work by Quintus opens with that event before proceeding to continue the story of the Trojan War. It's the only surviving epic from this century.<br />
<br />
Written roughly 1200 years after Homer, <i>The Fall of Troy</i> (also called <i>Posthomerica</i>) covers the same ground as some of the lost works in the Trojan War cycle. Did Quintus have access to those works and base his own on them? The introduction to this 1912 Loeb claims that even if he did use those works then the very scanty evidence suggests he completely reworked them. I haven't found more recent scholarship so don't know if that still stands.<br />

(A brief 1879 book by F.A. Paley called <a href="https://openlibrary.org/works/OL16332001W/Quintus_Smyrnaeus_and_the_Homer_of_the_tragic_poets"><i>Quintus Smyrnaeus and the "Homer" of the Tragic Poets</i></a> makes a claim that Quintus did draw from the cyclic epics but also that what we know as the work of Homer did as well and what early classical writers called "Homer" was in fact not the texts we know today. I'd guess this claim has not stood up.)<br />

As a companion to the last post about martyrs here is a history of the Bollandists, a long-lived group dedicated to compiling and evaluating original documents related to saints and martyrs. It sounds somewhat routine but what was originally planned as 18 volumes is now running 80 and not yet finished (after four centuries!). Perhaps more importantly one result of this work (called the <i>Acta Sanctorum</i>) has been to trim apocryphal and unreliable stories and even persons. For more see the <a href="http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/02630a.htm">extensive entry in <i>The Catholic Encyclopedia</i></a>.<br />

Delehaye covers the history as indicated in the title and is well-written (at least in translation) and fairly quick moving. Those of us fascinated by book hunting, philology, textual editing, religious legends and the like will be drawn to this. I doubt anybody else has read this far into the post.<br />
<br />
Hippolyte Delehaye (1859-1941) was a Jesuit scholar and himself a member of the Bollandists. Though he's described as a quiet scholar, in 1916 he was arrested for anti-German propaganda. His work was highly regarded and he received numerous honors, including an honorary doctorate from Oxford. There's an extensive appreciation and overview by Thomas J. Heffernan in <i>Medieval Scholarship: Biographical Studies on the Formation of a Discipline </i>(1998, edited by Helen Damico).<br />

This is one of those books, like Froissart's <i>Chronicles </i>or <i>The Augustan History</i>, that's rarely encountered in its full state so I'm posting an 1836-9 edition that appears to be basically a complete reprint. (More on that below.) This rarity of the full text is understandable since it's both an enormous work and one with a structure that allows easy excerpting. The current edition from Oxford World's Classics, for instance, contains mostly British martyrs. But there are numerous other editions over the centuries that reduce the size for one purpose or another, simplify the language, change the text and sometimes update it. An <a href="http://www.gutenberg.org/files/22400/22400-h/22400-h.htm">edition on Gutenberg.org</a> includes an account of martyrs during the French Revolution.<br />
<br />
John Foxe (1516-1587) was an academic who become a Protestant and then was caught up in the religious controversies of the period. When Mary I gained the throne Foxe moved to Frankfurt and Basel before returning during Elizabeth I's reign. His <i>Actes and Monuments</i> was written over a period of years as an attempt to chronicle Christian martyrs. It was hugely popular, at least partly because it tied into or was at least used for anti-Catholic sentiment. And also popular of course because of the sometimes lurid subject matter. I'm sure there's much more to this but I've only read a few bits of the book and not much actually about it. However my library has copies of Elizabeth Evenden & Thomas S. Freeman's <i>Religion and the Book in Early Modern England : The Making of Foxe's "Book of Martyrs" </i>(2011) and John N. King's <i>Foxe's Book of Martyrs and Early Modern Print Culture</i> (2006) so those sound much more up my alley.<br />

So about the edition above. It's also not exactly a true reprint since it reprints the original fourth edition (the last during Foxe's lifetime) but adds material from the previous editions. Latin text has been shifted to notes. The one thing that's not quite clear to me is that there's mention of a supplement that is either not scanned or is actually the Vol 1 linked above (which carried an 1841 date). The preface mentioning that also discusses some revisions that sound like they could be editorial changes to correct Foxe's errors but is not as clear about that as I would like.<br />

For the Fourth of July here are some collections of American folklore. These are more interesting, for me anyway, because they're not just tall tales but include ghost stories, monsters, hidden treasure and similar stories. The first couple are two-volume sets that appear to have been fairly popular at the time. Skinner continued with another book on Canada and Mexico (<i>Borders</i>) and Caribbean and Pacific (the somewhat imperialist-minded <i>Possessions</i>). Just for completeness I've included his book about botanical stories.<br />

Charles Montgomery Skinner (1852-1907) was a long-time journalist and editor for the <i>Brooklyn Eagle</i>. He also wrote a few plays and naturalist works. His bibliography includes the promising sounding <i>American Communes</i> but this turns out to be a 30-page pamphlet published by the newspaper that hasn't been digitized.<br />
<br />
The most information I can find about Skinner is a piece by Richard M. Dorson in <i>American Folk Legend: A Symposium</i>. He largely focuses on an overview of the work but does say that even though Skinner didn't source his materials much of it seems to be actual folklore and not invented stories.<br />

To mark the long-awaited publication of <i><a href="http://books.wwnorton.com/books/detail.aspx?ID=4294995588">The Collected Stories of Machado de Assis</a> </i>(which doesn't have all of his stories, only the ones in his seven published collections) here is the book with his first translation into English. More of Machado's work wouldn't appear in English until 1963. Three of his stories are included here along with one each from other writers barely known outside Brazil. In fact for the other writers these still appear to be almost their only works translated into English.<br />
<br />
Isaac Goldberg (1887-1938) was born in Boston and educated at Harvard. He was a reporter during the first world war, after which he released several biographies and critical works. These include <i><a href="https://openlibrary.org/works/OL1504125W/Six_plays_of_the_Yiddish_theatre">Six Plays of the Yiddish Theatre</a></i>, <i>The Man Mencken</i>, <i>Studies in Spanish-American Literature</i>, <i>George Gershwin: A Study in American Music</i>, <i>Havelock Ellis</i>, and numerous translations from Hebrew, Yiddish, Spanish and Russian.<br />
<br />
In fact, there doesn't appear to be a Goldberg bibliography but I ran across mentions of several items that could be subjects for further research, as they say. He did an introduction and notes for a 1937 edition of Alice Stone Blackwell's <i>Some Spanish American Poets</i> (1929), a thick anthology of 80 poets. In 1920 he co-translated <i>Pax </i>(1907) by Lorenzo Marroquin, described as "a satire on the degraded politics of Columbia". In the May 1919 issue of <i>The Stratford Journal</i> (which he co-edited) Goldberg translated two stories by Vicente Blasco Ibáñez and gave an overview of that writer's career. In 1918 he co-translated <i>Nine Humorous Tales</i> by Chekhov.<br />

Might as well re-launch the blog with a true crime book before heading back to obscure classical writers and forgotten historians. Kingston collects stories of then-recent criminals, noting that we "are content to behold crime through the eyes of our favourite journal and it is impossible to complain that the press does not cater fully for us in this respect." If only he could have jumped a head a century.<br />

The chapter headings include The Monte Carlo Trunk Murderess, The Bootmaker's Royal Wooing, Belle Star the Girl Bushranger, The Woman with the Fatal Eyes and The Secret Princess of Posen. I've only skimmed this but Kingston isn't interested in journalism so much as straight storytelling, and though he claims to have made efforts to get the facts I have some doubts. (One contemporary review says Kingston isn't up to the standard of William Roughead but then who is?)<br />

I haven't been able to pin down the author except that in the space of a few years he is credited with several books - some are available digitally such as this one, <i>Famous Morgantic Marriages</i> (1919), <i>Dramatic Days at the Old Bailey</i> (1920) and <i>Society Sensations</i> (1922). They all appear fairly similar in approach so my guess is was somebody who gave a try at writing, produced some popular works, then returned to whatever he did before.<br />

Before restarting the blog it seems worth posting about a site that probably will interest anybody who comes here.<br />
<br />
There's no shortage of sites recommending books or ones with various topical lists. What makes Five Books special is that there are long, substantial interviews about the lists and even more surprisingly interviews conducted by people who actually have read the books and (usually) understand the subjects. It makes for fascinating reading, even on topics that you might not otherwise care about and don't plan to read the books. (That would be neuroscience for me.) There are a few duds but mostly well worth while.<br />
<br />
As a bonus they've just added a section of user-submitted lists which I honestly expected to be a disaster (you've seen a website comments section right?). However it turns out to present some welcome expansion in subjects - Senegal, Islam, US Occultism, Blake Scholarship, travel books about India, Swiss fiction, Habsburg Empire and so on. There are no interviews for these, just short blurbs.<br />

There are a few changes, major and minor.<br />

First, there's a new name - The Magic Mirror in the Palace of Books. The old name is remaining in the subheading to avoid confusion and in case I want to revert at some time.<br />
<br />
I had never particularly liked the blunt description of the original name but was never able to come up with anything better. <i>The Magic Mirror in the Palace of Books</i> is one of the English titles of <i>Cefu Yuangui</i> (though apparently not an actual translation) and seemed to fit. <i>Cefu Yuangui</i> is a Chinese leishu, a term often translated as "encyclopedia" though the actual works aren't quite that. They're much closer to enormous anthologies or even small libraries. Roughly what I'd imagine the <i>Britannica </i>would have been like if edited by Edmund Wilson - why shouldn't the entry on Isaac Newton include big chunks of his <i>Principia</i>? Maybe even the entire work? Why write an entry on James II and the Revolution of 1688 when you can just toss in Macaulay?<br />
<br />
Next change is posts will be weekly. This had been the original plan but there's so much to cover I instead started with posting every other day. There's no way I could have kept that up - I think the longest stretch was about six weeks. Weekly posts will be more likely to be on time and there's still room for something during the week. (In fact one mid-week post is already scheduled.)<br />
<br />
The post formats will be slightly changed. In the past I always used the title of the book as the post title even when that was a bit vague or didn't give a good idea what the post is about. Foolish consistencies, you know? So now more descriptive post titles. Previous posts were also mostly one per book with the occasional associated work. I have at least one compendium post already written.<br />
<br />
There's still some cleanup for older posts that may never happen. In particular the image links are broken on several of them but that's very time consuming to fix. Most of the recent posts had direct uploads so that shouldn't be a problem.<br />

This is a fantastic catalog to a 2012 exhibition at Madrid's Fundación Juan March. There are reproductions of dozens of works ranging from political flyers to advertisements to Upton Sinclair book jackets. The catalog has the usual introductory essays (you can download it in Spanish and English editions); writings contemporary with the work from Tschichold, Aragon, Hoch and others; and the catalog of a 1931 exhibition on the same topic.<br />
<br />
All of the foundation's <a href="https://www.march.es/arte/catalogos/?p0=1&l=2">catalogs can be downloaded</a>. Others that seem promising are on Arcimboldo, Schwitters, surrealism in the graphic arts, Malevich. The older ones appear to be Spanish-only.<br />

The start of the title promises yet another school-aimed history but the remainder sounds a bit intriguing. In fact what the author has done is give each period or ruler a page of symbols (supposedly easier to remember) and then several pages of explanation. (The original edition was published in 1822 as <i>Symbolic Illustrations of the History of England</i>.)<br />
<br />
It's an odd approach and often too oblique, at times even comic with toothpick-shaped figures and clip-art icons. That image of a Druidical wicker man seems more like a jaunty Halloween icon. (And also an unintended notice about the date of the book - more recent research shows there was almost certainly no real life wicker man sacrifices.) Or one from Henry VIII showing persecutions, but then most of the ones for him seem a bit strained. Symbol pages for the Wars of the Roses are repeated battles and I think it would be harder to remember what the symbols represent than the actual names of the battles.<br />
<br />
I can find almost no information about Mary Ann Rundall. She was from Bath and also wrote an <i>Easy Grammar of Sacred History</i> (1813). <br />

Not my discovery - the <a href="https://oddbooks.co.uk/oddbooks/fourth-dimension-and-bible">Odd Books site</a> posted about it recently. But when I started this blog I'd hoped to have many more kook books than in fact I've found, though this might only partially fit that description. Granville (1863-1943) was a well-known mathematician with some substantial publications to his credit. (And as the title page notes, also responsible for a "transparent combined ruler and protractor" - something all academic CVs should mention!) Just skimming this book--because honestly it doesn't look quite that interesting--Granville seems to be trying to put Christianity on a firm basis using pure mathematics. Probably not very successfully since this book isn't referenced much afterwards. <br />

Today is Bloomsday so what else could I post? This is the Egoist Press edition which appeared in October 1922 after Shakespeare & Co's edition that February. It was printed from the same plates and includes several pages of errata that constitute almost a found poem.<br />

Phallic tree worship? Sure, why not - except this book is mainly a compendium of tree worship and little else. Even a contemporary notice in the Theosophical Review griped as much ("we fear however that literary <i>incubi </i>will find too much about Tree Worship and too little about Phallicism to delay them long over the present exposition") before it then veers off on its own tangent. <br />
<br />
The book was privately published with no author indication but some modern sources claim it was the work of occultist Hargrave Jennings (1817-1890). This doesn't seem to be a particularly firm attribution but I'll leave it.<br />

If you ever needed a defense of beards complete with a brief history of them - well here you go. This traces the wearing of beards from Greece and Assyria up to the then-modern day, apparently missing few opportunities to promote beards.<br />

Despite other sources the date of 1854 seems correct - at least there was a review in the <a href="https://books.google.com/books?id=IQIuAAAAYAAJ&pg=PA304&dq=%22ts+gowing%22&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjx4rjk8rXUAhWG5SYKHcWmAGYQ6AEINjAE#v=onepage&q=%22ts%20gowing%22&f=false">1854 Living Age</a>.<br />

Gowing is something of a mystery. He's mentioned several times in connection with the Society of the Arts so was probably a member and he once presented a paper on Suffolk place names so possibly from there. <br />
